The same day Sony said it would stop making discs for new games, it confirmed another ending: the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita is shutting down. New content purchases will stop once each region's store closes. Sony says you will still be able to re-download games you already bought "for the foreseeable future."
The official reason is payment processing. PS3 and Vita cannot meet modern commerce standards, so those storefronts cannot stay open. That is a real constraint. It is also the start of a longer pattern: if a platform is inconvenient to keep selling on, Sony stops selling on it.
The shutdown calendar
- August 2026 — PS3 Store closes in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This is the first wave, happening now.
- Late 2026 — Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries lose PS3 Store purchases.
- July 2027 — PS3 and PS Vita Stores close in every remaining country.
This is a phased cutoff, not a single global night. If you are in an early market, the window to buy missing classics is already closing. If you are in the United States, Europe, Japan, or most of the rest of the world, you have until next July.
What still works after the store dies
Sony's language is careful. You lose the ability to make new purchases on those devices. You do not automatically lose the games already on your account. Previously purchased content should remain downloadable after the closing date.
"For the foreseeable future" is not a guarantee in perpetuity. PlayStation 3 digital storefronts have been trimmed before — PS3 themes, avatars, and some video content already went away years ago. Treat re-download access as something to use, not something to assume will last another decade.
Practical steps before your region's date:
- Buy what you still want on PS3 or Vita — Once the store closes on that hardware, you cannot add new titles to the account from the console itself.
- Download copies while you can — A purchase in the cloud is only useful if you can still pull it down. Get the games onto local storage.
- Check PS Plus Premium classics — Some PS1 and PS2 titles stream or download on PS5. That is a different catalog, not a replacement for the PS3 store.
- Keep the hardware — A Vita with a filled memory card, or a PS3 with a populated drive, still plays what is already installed even if the store is gone.
How this sits next to the disc cutoff
July 1, 2026 was a single communications day with two messages: new games stop coming on disc in 2028, and old digital storefronts start closing now. Together they describe Sony's library strategy. New software moves to the current Store. Old software is allowed to go dark when the commerce stack gets expensive.
That matters for playtime history more than it first appears. PS Playtime and your PS5 Games tab read the current PSN activity database. They do not resurrect a Vita session from 2014 if Sony never carried that data forward. When a store closes, the purchase record usually survives on the account; the playtime often never made it to the modern profile in the first place.
